House of the Week

Charles Case House - architect, Neel Reid

This house could be considered many people's favorite house in Atlanta. It was my grandfather's favorite and is often called The Eagle House because there are eagles on the stone wall at the entrance to the courtyard. It was built from 1919-1921 for the Charles Cases and was called Somerset. In designing the house Neel Reid was inspired by Tintinhull in Somerset, England.

It's one of Neel Reid's best in Atlanta. Perfect in scale and size...not too big, not too small, just right as Goldilocks would say.

House of the Week

Hentz-Lane-Morrison House

I have had my eye on this house of the week for some time now. It is on a wonderful street in Buckhead that is on the way to a good friend's house - so I drive by it often. I was paging through Classic Atlanta by William Mitchell and found the story of this house. I love the stories of these houses as much as the houses themselves - the stories give them soul.

This Greek Revival house was designed and built in 1936 by Hal Hentz, of Hentz, Adler and Shutze. It was Hentz's residence in Atlanta. Hentz was originally from Florida and studied at Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. He studied architecture with Neel Reid, his eventual partner, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also studied architecture at Columbia University.

Hal Hentz and his wife lived in the house until her death in 1941. Mr Hentz lived there after his wife's death until the late 1940's when he sold the house to the Mills Lanes and retired to Florida. The Lanes eventually sold the house to their nephew, Mr. Morrison in 1973. The house is currently owned by well known architect Keith Summerour. I feel certain that the history of the house was a huge draw for Mr. Summerour.

The interiors of the house were photographed and published for Southern Accents in 2005. Interior design by Barbara Westbrook.

Out with the old and in with the new...

is a decorator's motto. Just had some new bedding made for my master. Peps it up a bit, don't you think?

Below is version #1 - right after we moved in...

This is version #2 below, which really bugs me now... it's muddy.

Much brighter and happier now...

Jonathan Adler Store Opening Last Night...FUN!

Happy Chic

This new store in Atlanta is seriously happy. How can it be happy and serious? Easy if you're Jonathan Adler with your finger on the pulse of fun and great furniture and accessories. Remember when you first went to an Ikea store - how it was bright and fun and you wanted to grab everything you saw? Jonathan Adler's store is like that but on steroids - and the quality of the furniture, lighting and accessories is obviously a big step up from Ikea. So this is serious grown up decorating...but FUN! The party was jammed - a great welcome to the South for Adler. The store is located at 1198 Howell Mill Road, next to Taqueria del Sol and near Star Provisions, and Ann and Sid Mashburn's wonderful stores.

Here are a few of our favorites from last night...

And finally the accessory that had everyone smiling...a needlepoint backgammon set.
